MX-800 is designed to operate up to 20 audio and video components; capable of creating 900 macro buttons with 199 commands each. The name of each component and its functions appear on a 1.4-inch x 2.1-inch LCD screen with text editing capabilities. While a standard remote control system utilizes only one equipment location, it is possible to build a system with multiple MX-800's and MRF-200's. The best attribute of the MX-800 is its software-assisted programming, an enormous time-saver. (Sorry, Mac fans--the software is for Windows only.) It's the same great idea that we've seen used in the Harmony universal remotes, and Home Theater Master makes the process a breeze. You almost don't need the manual--or the custom retailer who is supposed to program the remote for you. While its inclusion is understandable for custom installers used to the familiar RS-232 serial interface, we were forced to spend another $50 on a serial-to-USB adapter for our newer PC.
Secondly, Universal Remote has changed the MX-800’s exterior finish. The matte beige (okay, “sandstone”) coating on the top half of the remote has been replaced with shiny metallic platinum. Although no longer grippy, the new finish should solve a long-term use problem found with the lightly colored surface, where it would absorb skin oils and discolor around the edges and oft used buttons. The bottom half of the remote retains the same pleasantly grippy texture as the MX-700, but in black – the darker color hides any discoloration that may occur here. If you keep your gear stashed behind closed doors, the base station can accommodate up to six 10-foot wired flashers equipped with adhesive IR transmission "eyes" that get pasted to the IR panel on the front of each device.

Previously beige on the MX-700, the MX-800’s pad is black, similar to the MX-500’s dark blue version. However, the transparent ring that originally encircled the pad and was illuminated via the backlight has been painted the same platinum color as the remote and no longer illuminates. This is disappointing, since I really liked how the ring highlighted the menu pad’s position in a dark room. The backing color of the LCD is also different, less yellowy and more greyish.

The MRF-200 RF device is not designed to operate actual radio frequency equipment. Instead, it rebroadcasts RF signals sent from the MX-800 remote control as infrared. So, if your equipment is stored behind wooden doors, off to the side, or even in another room, the MX-800 can still be used for control. The tiny MRF-200 receives radio frequency signals transmitted by the MX-800 and turns them into infrared signals that the base station blasts at your A/V components. This enables you to control all your devices from 50 to 100 feet away, regardless of line-of-sight obstructions such as walls or floors. Their past history with multiple SL-9000 versions and the MX-500 sprouting into the computer programmable MX-700, makes it seems natural that the popular MX-500 design franchise would yet again be upgraded. Just as the MX-500 begat the MX-700, the MX-700 has now led to the $499 USD MSRP MX-800. Essentially the MX-700 remote control with added RF capabilities, the Home Theater Master MX-800 does have several other changes.First, the MX-800 does not ship with the tiny MX-200 remote control. Despite the similar model numbers, the MRF-200 is not a remote control – it’s an RF/IR transceiver.
It’s also finished identically to the remote control in platinum and black, so left out in the open it will be complementary. The MRF-200’s semi-flexible antenna is about 3.5” long (8.9cm) and can be adjusted for best performance no matter where the transceiver is situated. A plastic mounting plate (screws included!) slides onto the bottom of the unit and can be used to place the unit in gravity-defying locations.
The MX-800 and MRF-200 consistently achieves a range of 75 to 100 feet without any interference, even in hostile RF environments with multiple satellite receivers, computers and several key A/V components. This is a significant improvement over existing RF - based control systems in the marketplace. The powerful modular package consisting of the MX-800 PC Programmed Remote and the MRF-200 Base Station combine several technologies to bring users greater control of their A/V components. Using both RF and IR technologies, the MX-800 and MRF-200 can send commands up to 100 feet away, through walls and household structures, even in highly active RF environments. The MX-800 comes pre-programmed for over 1,000 audio and video components , and is capable of learning over 1500 functions from original remote controls via infrared or the PC. The unit can also be programmed to "punch through" operations to any of the 20 audio video components for volume, channel selection, recording and transport control, and information display. For example, the user can raise, lower, and mute the volume on the audio receiver while operating the remote control in the satellite mode.
Since infrared light bounces, the Front Blaster is often more than sufficient. However, sometimes when components are out of sight of the MRF-200 it is necessary to use the supplied Flashers. The Flasher has an IR blaster at the tip of the cable that should be affixed to the front panel of each A/V component. The other end of the IR Flasher connects via mini jack to the rear of the MRF-200.
